The Way It Was Meant to Be.

About four years ago we made a five-year plan to leave South Africa.  Initially our plan was to go to the UK.  We had lived in South Wales for about 4 years early in our marriage and our oldest son was actually born there. Two years into our plan we realized the salaries we were earning just wasn’t going to cut it.  With the cost of living in South Africa rising, plus debt we were still dragging with us from multiple bad decisions (don’t judge), hubby accepted a 2-year contract in Saudi Arabia working away for six months at a time.

Our journey started Dec 2018, My husband and I decided that SA was just not enough for my then 2 year old. We wanted a better future for her, better education and travel opportunities. The uphill battle started with getting information and home affairs. Well! Thanks to the admin for SA2EIRE Website the information was easy, so easy everything was there all I had to do was read. Home affairs on the other hand was awful. My husband, daughter and I took a day trip to HA Edenvale to apply for 2 x Birth cert (husband and I - we already had my daughters), 3 x SA Passports and 1 x Marriage certificate.

December 2019, visiting Ireland on holiday. Wow, what a beautiful country! From the moment we arrived, we were in an absolute awe as to how beautiful this stunning country is. We instantly fell in love! We were visiting our son and his wife who immigrated to Ireland end of February 2019. Towards the end of our 2 week stay we started talking about also moving to Ireland.... My husband is nearing retirement age in SA and we knew that a future in South Africa is not possible, not for us and neither for our teenage daughter. But that is all it was, an option to be considered, not an action plan. Maybe we will move in 2021 or 2022, who knows...

Reunion after months of separation. Amor's story about her and her husband's work permit changed from GWP to CSEP and travelling during Repatriation flights in Covid.

Our entire story started when my husband got a job in Ireland. We are all on south African passports.  He needed a work permit; he got a General Work Permit. We had to be separated for 12 months! Devastating I know!

Immigration during tough times!

I was a bit hesitant to write this story at first, because I think our circumstances are different from most others and we were very fortunate with our immigration. But maybe some of it could help others.

It all started in January 2020, when hubby and I had a conversation about maybe moving back overseas for the sake of our 2 teenage daughters and their future. (we lived in the UK about 18 years ago and our eldest was born in Bristol). We decided to put his CV out to a couple of recruitment companies in the UK. Hubby is on a British passport, as well as our eldest, myself and youngest on SA passports. (we have applied for our youngest daughters British passport also and should receive this soon).

Hubby received feedback from the recruitment agent within 2 weeks with 2 Skype interviews lined up. One company in Malta and one in Ireland for mid February 2020. He was offered both positions.
