Types of Visas for Visiting Ireland

Depending on your reason for visiting, you will need to apply for the appropriate visa. Ireland offers different types of visas for visitors. Here are the main categories:

Important Update on Visa Requirements for South African Passport Holders

Visa-Free Entry to Ireland Ended as of 10th July 2024

As of Wednesday, 10th July 2024, South African and  passport holders will be subject to Irish visa requirements. This means that these passport holders will need to obtain an Irish visa before traveling to Ireland.

    IMPORTANT NOTES:

    Important Notice Regarding Entry into Ireland:

    Even if you hold an entry visa, the official who stamps your landing permission has absolute discretion.

    • They can choose to allow or disallow entry to Ireland.

    • They can issue a 90-day holiday or visit entry stamp, or they can apply any duration under that 90-day period as they deem necessary.

    • They have the authority to detain you.

    • They can interrogate you.

    • They have the right to search your bags, read your phone, and inspect all correspondence.

    • They can turn you around and send you back to your country of origin without allowing you entry.

    It is important to be fully prepared for this discretion and understand that the final decision lies with the immigration official.

    • Your visa
    • Letter of invitation is required for all entries except for a tourist visa
    • Proof of Identity
    • Proof of Intention in Ireland
    • Proof of accommodation in Ireland
    • Proof of Funds
    • Proof of Travel Insurance
    • Proof of Return (more than just a return ticket)
    • Where you are booking into a hotel or accomodation,
    • Where you are not visiting friends or family, but have come to explore Ireland.
