Who can get a PPS number and when?
  • If you are coming over on a work permit, you already have a job offer and work permit in hand, that means you should have reason to get the PPS number.

  • If you are the spouse of a work permit holder, you are likely to only get one when you have your residence stamp IF you have reason to get the PPS number.

  • If you are an Irish/ British or EU passport holder you should be able to get it IF you have reason to get the PPS number.

  • If you are the Spouse of an Irish/ British or EU passport holder, you are likely to only get one when you have your residence stamp IF you have reason to get the PPS number.

  • Children of all the above, you should be able to get it IF one of the parent’s has a PPS number and IF they have reason to get the PPS number. HERE

Why Do I need a PPS number?

Some examples of where you may need a PPS Number are:

  • to apply for a social welfare payment
  • starting employment- to register to pay taxes
  • to access medical services (for a specific reason, e.g: Pregnancy and need to avail of the maternity services)
  • to apply for or exchange a driver’s licence
  • to access other public services
  • to register for a course in a school or college
Proofs to take along to the Intreo office/or upload online to get a PPS number

To get a PPS Number, you must provide evidence of:

  • your Identity
  • your address
  • your reason why you need a PPS Number

Proof of your identity:

  • That’s easy enough, it’s your passport
  • It needs to be in colour, showing the biometric page of your passport,
  • if you’re SA passport holder, then they also need the page of the passport showing the residency stamp, unless you have a work permit or job offer- if you have a job offer, because PPS is needed for registering for tax, they know getting an appointment to register at Garda might take a long time, so exception is made in those circumstances. All other circumstances, they USUALLY do not issue a PPS until you have your Stamp in your passport proving you are an approved resident

Proof of your address:

  • The document must show your name and address and not be older than 3 months:
  • A household utility bill (gas, electric, refuse removal for example)
an official letter or document from government or council (for example RTB registration or EU treaty approval letter if you’ve moved as spouse of EU)
  • a financial statement (bank or credit card statement)
  • property lease or tenancy agreement (sometimes not accepted needs support of a utility bill in most cases, and/or the RTB registration)

Let’s say you haven’t found a rental yet? Have no bills in your name?

  • Then you can try use the following:
  • You could approach the owner of the BnB and ask them to provide a letter and a copy of their bill for you to apply- if they are willing to?
  • Something from the hotel or a receipt from the hotel you’re booked in to
  • If you are staying with friends or relatives, an original household bill in their name, with a note from them confirming you are living with them
  • NOTE: Saying you are living somewhere, where you are not living can be considered fraud, and lying to a government department might not be a good idea!

Your reason why you need a PPS Number:

  • Actual proof of the REASON you are applying:
  • if its because you want to register for tax- include the job offer/contract as proof you are being employed
  • if the driver’s exchange, fill in the NDLS form and include the filled out form with the application (see below for this to download)
  • if its for registering for medical (preganancy for example) include a GP stating why you need a PPS (eg: preganancy)
  • if for kids enrolled in school, a letter from the school asking for a PPS number to enroll them to school
  • if RTB registration, have a letter from the landlord or agent requesting your PPS to register you with the RTB
  • … your reason must be valid and from a body that needs it and is allowed to request that PPS number
  • … it must be in actual written from from that gov body requesting PPS is needed and why
